Recovery Planning Scientist – Contract Position
Overview: The Nova Scotia Salmon Association and its partners are conducting a large-scale, conservation planning initiative throughout eight watersheds in Nova Scotia. This project aims to restore important habitat for four aquatic species at risk: Atlantic Salmon, American Eel, Atlantic Whitefish and Brook Floater. The candidate will be responsible for developing watershed-level planning documents in conjunction with other NSSA staff; provide scientific guidance on stream restoration initiatives; and contribute to the recovery planning of aquatic species at risk in Nova Scotia. The Recovery Planning Scientist will be working under the direction of Research Scientist, Dr. Eddie Halfyard.

Position Title : Recovery Planning Scientist – Contract
Salary: $52,000
Start & End Date: January 3rd 2022 – December 30th 2022
Estimated # of Weeks: 52 (1 year)
Hours Per Week: 37.5
Work Location: Halifax Regional Municipality (Bedford office/work from home)
Duties may include:
Synthesize and manage large-scale geodatabase within Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
Conduct spatial statistical analysis of species-habitat data
Use conservation-planning software program Zonation to identify and prioritize restoration needs
Complete a written project report, with the potential of contributing to writing primary literature for publication
Present project outcomes to partners and local community
Provide occasional logistical support for field research and monitoring programs (<5% of time)
Eligibility requirements:
Graduate degree from a recognized postsecondary institution with specialization in biostatistics, geospatial sciences, biological sciences which emphasis on geospatial modelling and/or species-habitat interactions, environmental sciences or another field related to the duties of the position
Broad knowledge of aquatic species conservation and habitat management
Experience working with Microsoft Excel, Rstudios, and GIS for data processing and analysis
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
Location:
Much of the work can occur remotely and collaboration with other NSSA staff or partners can occur virtually. However, space will be available in the NSSA office (Bedford, NS) and occasional in-person meetings may be preferential.
