Fish Friends

Fish Friends is a well-loved popular classroom program to raise salmon, and now trout, from eggs to fry in an aquarium. First developed by the Atlantic Salmon Federation more then 25 years ago, it includes lesson plans on topics like life cycle, egg development, habitat, and threats. In Nova Scotia, many NSSA affiliates, local river associations and environmental groups actively support the program in their community schools. This ranges from helping with aquarium and chilling unit set up and troubleshooting, coordinating with provincial hatcheries to get trout eggs, give classroom presentations and help with “Fry release days”. The NSSA has an equipment replacement fund available to help keep costs manageable for schools and affiliates.
